New Releases from Burt & Alcorn and The Rope & Duck Company

Susan Alcorn and George Burt: 'A&B' CDR limited to 100 copies SOLD OUT AT SOURCE

This record documents the first musical meeting between the guitarists Susan Alcorn and George Burt when Susan arrived in Glasgow on a rainy weekend in November 2009 to play as a duo with George at the second Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra festival.

Susan Alcorn’s work is marked by purity of sound, a keen sense of sonic weight and an ear for clear melodic line. Her reputation as one of the most striking voices in contemporary music has led her to work with underground musical luminaries such as Jandek, Evan Parker, Maggie Nicols, Fred Frith, Eugene Chadbourne and Pauline Oliveros. George Burt is an exceptional guitarist, an anarchist of sound whose hands dance him through a central belt poetics all his own. He is a founder member of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra and co-leader of the heart of Scottish un-jazz the Burt MacDonald 5

The Rope & Duck Company: 'Waymarkers' CDR limited to 100 copies

The Rope & Duck Company are Aileen Campbell – voice, Emma Roche – flute and Una MacGlone – double bass. Waymarkers is their first CD as a trio.

Campbell, MacGlone and Roche have been playing together as members of the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra for over five years and have also collaborated on various art and performance projects for the Transmission gallery and Tramway in Glasgow and the November Music festival in the Netherlands. The trio investigate a kind of chamber improvisation utilising a sonorous and tonal sensibility, exploring more traditional methods of sound production side by side with more extended techniques. All tracks were recorded at Streetlevel Photoworks Gallery in Glasgow with the final two recorded live in concert by John Cavanagh mixing live onto 1/4 inch tape.

Both discs available now from Boa Melody Bar

George Burt & Susan Alcorn

George Burt and Susan Alcorn will be performing at the Glasgow Jazz Festival alongside the Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra on Saturday the 26th of June at the Tron Theatre from 14:00. Their New CDR 'A&B' on Iorram Records will be released the same day, copies available at the gig.

George Burt and Susan Alcorn first met when George performed as one of the support acts at Susan’s first concert in Scotland at the 13th Note Glasgow in 1998. It was already clear that there were intriguing overlaps in outlook, approach and background. Susan’s career in perfectly normal country bands and George’s in inoffensive folk and jazz bands has led both players by long circuitous routes to a radical deconstruction of standard guitar techniques largely growing out of the inextricable mixture of exasperation and profound respect they both feel for the musics that continue to nurture them.
